The Cowsills

The Cowsills, the original Family Band from the 1960’s, are known for their bubblegum and psychedelic pop melodies and vocal harmonies.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard The Cowsills; it was in a supermarket, in the summer of 1999 [this happens often, actually]. It was “The Rain, The Park, And Other Things”, although I didn’t know it at the time. I heard it playing over the speakers, late at night as we were shopping. I walked around the isles trying to find the closest speaker to hear it more clearly… I loved it. I asked what I was listening to, and was told, “The Cowsills”.

I never thought at that moment as a teenager in 1999 I would one day be able to collect The Cowsills vinyl and vintage teen magazines with photos and articles about them, see them perform live in concert, and even meet them. I have since done all that and more, and The Cowsills to date remain one of my favorite bands, *and* favorite people. They are So. Nice. And anyone I mention them to says the same thing: they as talented as musicians as they are genuine and nice. You don’t always see that kind of graciousness in this industry.

To quote their website, “From the 1960’s to the 21st century, The Cowsills have defined melodic pop harmonies.” The Cowsills are the original Family Band, beginning their career out of Newport, Rhode Island in the spring of 1965 with brothers Bill, Bob, Barry, and John, being managed by father “Bud” Cowsill. Eventually mother Barbara joined the scene along with Paul and youngest sibling Susan Cowsill, and they were managed by  Richard “Biggie” Korn. Their other sibling Richard, Bob’s twin brother, was never officially part of the line-up, although he occasionally played with his family over the years. They are best known for their hits, “The Rain, The Park, And Other Things”, “Indian Lake”, and their greatest hit, their cover of 60’s counter-culture musical hit, “Hair”. They are the band who inspired 70’s TV sitcom, The Partridge Family.

Since meeting them, I have been fortunate enough to be able to interview them. I plan to interview as many family members as possible, so keep checking back more for updates and new interviews.
